Sunday Chilli Cookoff Winners Announced at Chillifest

(Taylorville)--Winners were announced at the end of the day on Sunday, from the 2nd day of International Chilli Society chilli cook-off competition at the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest.

 

In the ICS chilli competition, Bob Hall of Taylorville advanced to the World Championship with a first place win on Sunday. Hall won $500 and a plaque. Second place winner was Aldo Klinghammer of Taylorville, who won $200 and a plaque. Third place winner was Diane Lentz of Nicholasville, Kentucky, who won $100 and a plaque.

 

In the chilli verde cook-off, first place winner of $200 and a plaque, was Julie Netzer of Indiana. 2nd place winner of $50 and a plaque, was George McMinn of Decatur. Third place winner was Scott Barrett, who won $25 and a plaque.

 

In the salsa competition, first place went to Larry Lentz of Nicholasville, Kentucky who won $100 and a plaque. 2nd place winner was Bill Donovan of Cincinnati, Ohio, who won $25 and a plaque. Third place winner was Gayle Donovan, also of Cincinnati, Ohio, who won a plaque.

Taylorville Chillifest Holds Pie Eating Contest

(Taylorville)--4 senior members of the Taylorville Tornadoes football team, participated in the 4th annual pie eating contest at the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest Sunday afternoon on the Taylorville square. The contest was sponsored by Kroger, that also provided the apple pies for the contestants to devour.

 

Taylorville head football coach Jeb Odam was the judge, and timed the 4 contestants who had 10 minutes to down as much apple pie as possible.

 

The winner was defensive back Kenny Harris, who downed an entire apple pie in 10 minutes.

 

Other participants included offensive lineman and senior captain Jacob Yard, wide receiver Ty Stevens, and wide receiver Dustin Ehrhardt.

 

Harris won gift certificates from the Taylorville McDonald's restaurant.

2009 Chillifest Raffle Winners Drawn

 (Taylorville)--Raffle winners were drawn at the conclusion of the 24th annual Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest on the Taylorville square Sunday afternoon.

 

All winners can claim their prizes at the Chamber office on the 2nd floor of the US Bank building on the south side of the Taylorville square, during weekday business hours.

 

Winners of round trip air fare for 2 from Direct Air, were Bridgette Crawford and Stacy Barnes.

 

A one year's membership at the Christian County YMCA was won by Tom Calvert.

 

A $250 gift certificate good at Jensen Home Furnishings in Taylorville, wa won by Gary Sassatelli.

 

3 months of Internet service from New Wave Communications, was won by Ron Locke.

 

Golf and cart for 4 to play 18 holes at Lake Shore Golf Course south of Taylorville, was won by Walt Wingler.

 

A Coleman portable propane grill from Waste Management, was won by Dan McNeely.

 

2 tickets to the Northwestern at Illinois football game, provided by WTIM 97.3, were won by Laura Oyler.

 

$25 Chamber gift certificates provided by the Palmer Bank, were won by Tom Calbert and Rita Altman.

 

$25 gift cards good at the Taylorville Wal-Mart Super Center, were won by Martha Fowler and Ron Locke.

 

A 3-month newspaper subscription to the Breeze-Courier was won by Steve Sprehe (pron. spray).

 

A Bluetooth headset from One Stop Communications, was won by Rita Altman.

 

7 games of open bowling from the Olde Bowl in Taylorville, were won by Joan Cornell.

 

2 lunch buffets at the One East Market restaurant, were won by Linda Shaeffer.

Beautiful Baby Contest Held Sunday at Chillifest

 (Taylorville)--30 of the most beautiful babies in Christian County, competed in the 6th annual "Beautiful Baby Contest" at the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest Sunday morning on the Taylorville square.

 

The contest was sponsored by People's Bank and Trust, which provided the winner with a $100 savings bond, the first runner-up a $75 savings bond, and the 2nd runner-up with a $50 savings bond.

 

A People's Choice Winner voted on with contributions in cannisters for each of the 30 contestants the day before, was also named. That winner received a $25 Visa gift card donated by Hickman, Specha, Steiner, and Beckley LLP in Taylorville.

 

Winner of the contest was 3-year-old Lilly VanWinsen, the daughter of Michelle Holmes of Taylorville. First runner-up was 8-and-a-half-month-old JayLyn Marie Durbin, the daughter of Zac and Amber Durbin of Taylorville. 2nd runner-up was 23-month-old Dawson Bradley Jenkins, the son of Jessica Durbin and Bradley Jenkins. The People's Choice Award went to 8-and-a-half-month-old Drew Christopher Morgan, the son of Jim and Shannon Morgan of Taylorville.

International Chilli Society Cookoff Winners Announced Saturday

 (Taylorville)--Chilli, chilli verde, and salsa winners were announced after a day of judging at the first day of the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest on Saturday. The cookoff was an officially-sanctioned cookoff by the International Chilli Society.

 

Some 34 chilli cooks for 6 states, participated in the 3 contests.

 

In the chilli competition, first place winner, who received 500-dollars and a plaque, was Joni Deere of Pana. Deere also earned the right to advance to the world championships.

 

Second place winner, who won 200-dollars and a plaque, was Aldo Klinghamer of Taylorville, and third place winner, who won 100-dollars and a plaque, was Larry Lentz of Nicholasville, Kentucky.

 

In the chilli verde competition, first place winner was Chuck Hoff of Columbus, Ohio. Hoff won 200-dollars and a plaque. Second place winner, who won 50-dollars and a plaque, was Diane Lentz of Nicholasville, Kentucky. Third place winner, who won 25-dollars and a plaque, was Bill Donovan of Cincinnati, Ohio.

 

In the salsa competition, first place winner, who won 100-dollars and a plaque, was Diane Lentz of Nicholasville, Kentucky. Second place winner was Charlie Ward of Idaho, who won 25-dollars and a plaque. Third place winner, winning a plaque, was Josh Nicol.

"Greatest Pumpkin" Contest Held Saturday at Taylorville Chillifest

 (Taylorville)--Winners in the first "Great Pumpkin" Contest, sponsored by the Christian County Farm Bureau, were announced on Saturday at the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest.

 

The Farm Bureau challenged pumpkin growers in the area, to grow the largest pumpkin. There 3 categories of judging--youth, outside-of-Christian County, and inside Christian County.

 

There were a total of 15 pumpkins entered in the contest.

 

In the youth division, Meredith Repscher of Taylorville grew the largest pumpkin, weighing in at 174 pounds. In the out of county division, Kyle Winkelmann of Tallula grew the largest pumpkin, weighing in at 268 pounds. And in the Christian County division, Tyson Naylor of Taylorville grew the largest pumpkin, weighing 752 pounds.

 

The Christian County Farm Bureau provided cash prizes and a certificate for each winner.

Ponytail Contest Winners Announced Saturday at Chillifest

(Taylorville)--Ponytail contest winners were announced on Saturday at the Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest.

 

The contest was sponsored by the Karma Hair Salon in Taylorville. There were 3 age groups of competition.

 

In the zero to 4-year-old age group, Macylyn Richards had the longest ponytail, measuring 16 inches.

 

In the 5-to-8-year old age group, Kirra Walter had the longest ponytail, measuring 28 inches.

 

And in the 9-to-12-year-old age group, Koti Jo Smith had the longest ponytail, measuing 34 1/2 inches.

 

Thanks to all those who participated in the 2nd annual ponytail contest at Chillifest.

Little Miss, Little Mister Chilli Peppers Crowned Saturday at Day # 1 of 2009 Chillifest

(Taylorville)--23 young men and women competed on Saturday for the Little Miss and Little Mister Chilli Pepper titles, to kickoff the 24th annual Greater Taylorville Chamber of Commerce Chillifest.

 

In the Little Miss Chilli Pepper competition, first place winner was 5-year-old Alexis Paige Kent, daughter of Barry and Amy Kent of Morrisonville. 2nd place winner was Alexya Cisco, the 5-year-old daughter of Josh, Sr., and Stephanie Cisco of Stonington. 3rd place winner was 4-year-old Maryssa Hendricks, the daughter of Mike and Elizabeth Hendricks of Morrisonville.

 

In the Little Mister Chilli Pepper competition, first place winner was 4-year-old Aden Toberman, the son of Ben and Beth Toberman of Taylorville. 2nd place winner was Dakota Dawson, the 4-year-old son of Matt and Patty Dawson of Taylorville. 3rd place winner was Zachary McMillon, the 4-year-old son of Amanda and Jim McMillon of Taylorville.

 

Alexis and Aden will reign over the 2009 Chillifest, as well as represent Chillifest at parades and events in the next 12 months.
